Neighbors Feed Neighbors: 100+ Families Reached Through Community Partnership (Spring 2026)

On November 20, 2025, DFC launched its partnership with ULEM (Urban League of Easter Massachusetts) to receive a seed fund supporting the DFC “Neighbors Feed Neighbors” Fund. Our guests included Valerie from Family Nurturing Center and Ella from Bowdoin Street Health Center. These two orgs served as our pilot partners to test our NFN Fund, thank you!

At Dorchester Food Co-op, we believe that community care works best when neighbors show up for neighbors.

Thanks to the generosity of the Dorchester Food Co-op community and support from the Neighbors Feed Neighbors Fund, we partnered with 12 local organizations to distribute Dorchester Food Co-op gift cards directly to families across Greater Boston. Together, we reached more than 100 families across six ZIP codes, helping residents purchase fresh produce, pantry staples, culturally relevant foods, and household essentials from their community-owned grocery store.

This initiative built upon the momentum of our partnership with ULEM and demonstrated what is possible when community organizations work together toward a shared goal: ensuring that everyone has access to healthy food and local resources.

Led by DFC Board Member Roudnie C., the outreach effort connected with organizations already serving families, seniors, immigrants, faith communities, and residents facing food insecurity. Rather than asking families to come to us, we brought support directly into the neighborhoods where trust and relationships already exist.

Community Partners

Our sincere thanks to the following organizations for helping us identify families and distribute gift cards:

These organizations represent a wide range of community expertise and trusted neighborhood leadership. Together, they helped ensure that support reached families who could benefit most from additional food assistance.

Building a Stronger Local Food System

One of the unique aspects of this initiative is that every gift card distributed supports two goals at once.

Families receive direct assistance to purchase groceries and prepared foods, while every dollar spent stays within a community-owned business that reinvests in local jobs, food access programs, and neighborhood economic development.

As Boston's community-owned grocery store, Dorchester Food Co-op exists because residents believed that food access, economic opportunity, and community ownership belong together. Programs like Neighbors Feed Neighbors allow us to put those values into action.

The gift card recipients included seniors, working families, immigrants, refugees, and community members navigating financial hardship. Many were introduced to the Co-op for the first time through a trusted local organization, creating new connections that we hope will continue long after the gift cards have been redeemed.

Looking Ahead

The success of this pilot demonstrates the power of collaboration. No single organization can solve food insecurity alone, but together we can create pathways that strengthen families, support local businesses, and build healthier neighborhoods.

Dorchester Food Co-op is grateful to every partner organization, community leader, volunteer, donor, and family who participated in this effort. We look forward to expanding the reach of the Neighbors Feed Neighbors Fund and continuing to invest in community-led solutions that keep food on tables and resources in our neighborhoods.

Because when neighbors feed neighbors, entire communities thrive. 💚💜
